![]() view artwork ![]() view artwork The old spelling of my family name was Hoppringill. Smailholm Tower was originally built by my ancestors in the 15th century. Smailholm Tower lies almost exactly mid way between Melrose and Kelso in the Scottish Borders. Its dramatic situation, atop a crag of Lady Hill, commands wide views over the surrounding countryside. The tower is located just west of Sandyknowe farm and is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument in the care of Historic Scotland. The surname Hoppringill dates from the reign of Alexander III of Scotland (1249-86) and is one of the oldest names of the Scottish Border region.
